battery clip remover January 6, 2009 i was very amazed with what the netbook can do. however, when i was taking out the battery, the sliding clip snapped and was removed. i was able to put it back, but i am afraid that any time from now, it would snap out again.
Great addition to a network... January 6, 2009 The Acer Netbook has been a great addition to our network at home. It provides a great terminal to surf the web and check email. I haven't tried much more than that - but it serves the reason for purchased perfectly. Not having a CD/DVD drive is not an issue since you can copy items onto a Flash Drive and install easily. Have had not issues with any programs to include MS Office 2007 Pro. Definitely Recommend.
Love it! January 6, 2009 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Though it wasn't perfect out of the box, I do love my Acer Aspire One. It works well enough as configured, but for power use it does require a RAM and WiFi card upgrade. System RAM was half-used with no programs running, and performance was just okay. Adding 1GB of RAM made the Aspire One blaze along. But the process is not for the amateur, nor the faint of heart. You have to take the computer apart completely and remove the motherboard. Acer placed the memory as deep as they could, unfortunately. It's easy, but you just have to be mindful of which screws go where. There are a few videos on YouTube that show the process.
And while you have the computer apart, you should upgrade the WiFi card. The one that shipped with my Aspire One was unreliable and would just stop receiving from time to time. Replacing it with the Intel 4965AGN card produced amazing results. Even with my 802.11b router, the connection feels more like a wired connection, at least 5x faster than the Atheros card that ships with the computer. And with a wireless G connection, it's ridiculously fast.
Total cost to upgrade the unit was $50: $12.99 for the RAM and $34 for the WiFi card. Upgrade time was about an hour. It took me a little longer because I forgot to uninstall the Atheros software, which required that I reinstall the card to uninstall the SW.
The only other problem with the Aspire One is that it occasionally doesn't go into standby mode. This usually happens after I or some application installs something. I have to hard reboot, fully boot the computer, then fully shut it down and restart again for Standby to start working properly again.
Other than that, it's a sweet little computer. Though I have medium-sized hands, the keyboard works fine for me -- and I'm pretty picky about keyboards. The screen is small, but I like that. My daughter doesn't like that the screen is too short vertically to play Webkins, so if you use programs like this, you might need to consider a larger computer, but for basic stuff, including running most Windows XP programs written over the last eight years, the Aspire One is a great choice. I'm mostly a Mac user, but do need a PC now and then, and the Aspire One is perfect. I can hook it up to a monitor and keyboard for "bigger" work, and it will sync to many different screen sizes.
It's also a great tool for photographers. I use it on location to download and view my images when I don't want to bring the big PowerBook along. Its 6-hour battery life makes it perfect for such work.
Just an amazing device, I couldn't be more pleased.
Great addition to our computers January 6, 2009 This small computer, which at this point is a bit bigger than our oldest home computer, works great. We use it for travel and accessing stuff of all kinds at different locations. I do not do much keyboard work on the machine because the keys are small and close together but the mouse works well for a pad if a bit sensitive. You have to have a light touch. I bought the gig of RAM so it loads quickly and processes stuff rapidly. We are taking it with us to India to backup our pictures, and videos and to communicate with our families. We have Skype loaded and have a skype name for it. We use it daily somewhere in the house by accessing our wi-fi. I found free wi-fi almost everywhere I traveled so getting on the internet is no problem. If you travel a lot or are going places with no computer, like Grandpa's house, this is the solution. It is light, works like a big dog, and fast. I have not loaded the MSOffice stuff but downloaded OpenOffice which works fine for what we need. The instructions to get going are a little sketchy so if you have not used a computer before you may want someone to work with you on start up and set up. The documentation is a .PDF file which irritates some people but the operational details are there if you want them. Overall, this is for communications. If you want to use it for serious computer work, buy a portable keyboard and mouse. There are plenty of ports, card readers etc. But for emails, and communications away from home base this is great.
Great little big thing January 6, 2009 I looked around before getting a netbook. I basically needed a computer to check my e-mail at home, youtube around, blog, keep my music, my pictures, personal files, I wanted a computer with long battery life, portable, maybe make some funky loops and grooves, bought the Acer Aspire One, 6 -cell, 160GB.... got it all, and a bit more.
It's a nice little machine, boots up pretty quick, shuts down fast also, I would recommend not installing heavy ram consuming apps. It does have a kindy noisy fan as other reviews will tell you but it doesn't get in your way, If you don't mind a little fan noise you'll be pretty satisfied with this product.
